Lessons from our work
The Learning Trust has been approved for SEF Round 3!
We’re thrilled to announce that The Learning Trust (TLT) has been approved for the Social Employment Fund (SEF) Round 3. As a key implementing partner of the SEF, TLT has successfully created over 10,000 paid work opportunities in the after-school sector through the Catch-up Coalition (CuC).
This critical work not only broadens our impact but also empowers After School Programmes (ASPs) to scale, enhance their offerings, and create meaningful employment opportunities. In preparation for SEF Round 3, we brought together all our SEF implementing partners for working sessions in the Eastern Cape, Western Cape, and Gauteng. These sessions focused on aligning our planning processes for the SEF project, covering key areas such as administrative processes, contracting, Monitoring, Evaluation, and Learning (MEL), communication, and advocacy goals.
We also provided a detailed overview of the Coalition—its purpose, objectives, and the collaborative process behind its development. These working sessions were instrumental in equipping our partners with the knowledge and tools needed to streamline operations. Our goal is to ensure that all partners are fully prepared for the upcoming phases, understand the necessary documentation, and can establish effective daily work routines.
As we move forward with our CuC partners in this new round, we remain committed to ensuring impactful project implementation.
Communities of Practice
In the second quarter of 2024 we hosted two Communities of Practice (CoPs) to strengthen our work and engagements with our after-school partners. In the Western Cape, the CoP held under the theme, “Building Resilient and Sustainable Organisations,” was dedicated to fostering resilience and sustainability for After School Programmes.
We explored the core elements of building organisations that can not only withstand challenges but also thrive amid uncertainty. Discussions covered the pillars of resilience, innovation, and agile leadership, providing participants with insights to fortify their organisations against adversity.
Meanwhile, in Gauteng, the CoP explored leveraging social media for non-profits, providing practical tools and strategies for emerging non-profits to enhance their online presence. By focusing on key aspects of social media, we explored various ways organisations can strengthen their outreach and impact.
These sessions were made possible through the support of our hosts, Ikamva Labantwana Bethu and Soweto Basketball Academy. You can access our Learning Briefs from both CoPs here and here.
Management Accelerator Programme Immersion
As we wrapped up the first Management Accelerator Programme (MAP), participants gathered in Stellenbosch for a final transformative immersion, equipping them with essential skills including emotional intelligence, decision-making, performance management and collaboration, as well as reshaping their management approach.
We’re proud of the many participants who have since advanced into new roles within their organisations.
Key takeaways include Andisiwe Mbelekane from Masifunde’s realisation that “Leadership is a function, not a title,” and Brandon Mwale from OLICO’s shift toward leadership grounded in empathy. Ebrahim Denzel De Swardt from Seven Passes enhanced his strategic vision and fundraising strategies, while Emmerentia Saffier-Adams from I Protect Me and Lehlohonolo Mahlomotja from Matlhogonolo Community Outreach Centre emphasised growth in emotional intelligence and improved organisational structure.
Meanwhile, Lethabo Mokhonoana from GAP Connect highlighted the importance of communication, collaboration, and fostering a caring organisational culture. A shared focus on employee well-being and mental health emerged as a critical theme. The MAP Immersion has inspired these managers to continue driving positive change within their organisations and communities. Visit our YouTube channel to watch some of our participants’ reflections.
News from the field
#ThethaNgeUnemployment
In June, TLT joined Youth Capital for the #ThethaNgeUnemployment campaign, a conversation card game that delves into what it’s like to grow up and dream in South Africa. This campaign provided a platform for young people to share their personal stories, aspirations, and the challenges they face in a country where unemployment is a serious challenge.
Through these conversations, we’re exploring the complex realities of youth unemployment, shedding light on the barriers that prevent many young South Africans from realising their dreams. The campaign is not only amplifying the voices of the youth but also sparks meaningful discussions on how to create pathways for a better future.
Play the game here and share with us photos and videos, showing you and your friends and family playing. Also remember to tag us across all social media platforms!
